Hearing these tracks brings a massive flood of memories straight back to my bones. I still vividly remember being squeezed into the front room of the Rose Hotel, performing on keys alongside Jackie back in 2001.I was only 20 years old at the time, and those years were easily the most formative of my entire career. Back then, I faced a major crossroads that most young musicians encounter. But instead of taking the traditional academic route and studying at a formal music conservatory, I decided to follow my gut. The AI-generated "Papaoutai (Afro Soul)" cover has accumulated over 14 million Spotify streams and landed on the global Billboard charts. My position on it? I am firmly on the fence. On one hand, I’m proud. The track was officially green lit by Stromae’s team at Mosaert and distributed globally by Universal Music Group. Financially, it is a blessing. The French performing rights society SACEM registered it as a legal cover, meaning the publishing royalties flow directly back to us as original writers.In a tough streaming climate, this income helps me fund organic, human-made music on my independent label, Urban Trout Records. I’ve always believed technology can be "just a new instrument," much like the vocoder I’ve used on my own live recordings. On the other hand, the ethics are deeply troubling. I think the producers cloned the voice of singer Arsene Mukendi without his initial knowledge or consent. Watching him lip-sync to a synthetic clone of his own voice in viral videos is uncanny, raising serious concerns about digital and cultural appropriation. Worse, "Papaoutai" is Stromae’s deeply personal cry for his father, who was killed in the Rwandan genocide.When an algorithm simulates that grief to feed a streaming platform, it feels like emotional authenticity has become completely optional. So, I remain conflicted. I am grateful for the royalties, but we must fight to protect vocal identity and ensure AI remains a tool in the service of human artists, not a replacement for them. They book based on art, not just "numbers." Seeing a German Jazz Prize-winning festival driven out of existence by administrative silence is heartbreaking. We cannot let these spaces disappear. ### **Music Technique.** Performing the *Team Aquatic* album as a trio was a technical puzzle. Ideally, this music requires 5 people. My label at the time suggested I play solo. Essentially "DJing" my own tracks. I couldn't do it. I fought for a band. Since we had no bassist, I mapped all the bass lines onto two SPD-S pads. Jose had to play full drums while simultaneously triggering every bass note. We were on a tight schedule to release the EP, *ideally yesterday*, so I contacted him to present our work, which he immediately listened to. Their approach joined jazz harmony with the physical pulse of dance and island rhythms. The album later received an **ARIA nomination for Best Jazz Album (2005)** and helped launch Ottignon’s international path. ### A short life for many labels *Culture Tunnels* first appeared through **Strange Music / Vitamin Records (Australia)**, followed by licensed editions in France and the UK. Most of those independents could not survive the digital transition. When MP3s and file-sharing arrived, CD sales collapsed. Distribution networks disappeared and margins vanished. Without major-label scale or capital, small imprints closed or were absorbed by others. What had been a patchwork of local scenes became a few global platforms controlled by algorithms. Artists who wanted to keep releasing music learned to operate independently, creating their own studios, labels, and direct-to-listener systems. Ottignon’s later projects were born from that reality. ### The digital afterlife Two decades later the music still circulates. They have never been heard publicly. It was with a heavy heart that I learned of Hermeto Pascoal’s passing on 13 September 2025\. From now on, I make a promise to myself: never again miss the chance to witness the performances of legends while they are still among us. Nicknamed *“O Bruxo”* (The Sorcerer), Hermeto was a composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and improviser who changed the way we think about sound itself. He believed music was everywhere, water, wind, pots, pans, animals, silence. His fearless approach made him both a cult figure in Brazil and a revered innovator across the globe. For me, Hermeto was more than a musician. He embodied the idea that music is medicine, and that every element of nature can be transformed into song. In his work, I hear the path I’ve always longed to explore: dissolving the boundary between nature and sound. One performance that captures this spirit is this video above**☝︎**, where he turns water and wind into pure music. It is not just a performance, it is communion. For those wanting to step into his world, two recordings remain timeless entry points: - ***Slaves Mass* (1977)**, a groundbreaking solo project blending Brazilian folklore, jazz, and avant-garde experimentation. - ***Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo* (1982)**, capturing the explosive creativity of his ensemble at its peak, where chaos and beauty meet. - ***Viajando com o som* (2017)**, a long-lost treasure (recorded in 1976),where Hermeto’s vision of boundless improvisation meets Brazilian soul. - ***Pra Você, Ilza* (2024)**, his final gift before his departure, released just last year, showing that even at the end of his journey, Hermeto was still reaching for the infinite. Cute fact, it was dedicated to Ilza, his wife of over forty years. Hermeto often said he composed for the universe, not just for audiences. Now, at 89, he has returned to the ether. Aron is often building a melodic motif on the piano by bouncing off the unpredictable timbre, tone, texture and noise Rodi is creating through sampling, granular synthesis and live studio mixing techniques.
