Ten years playing pan in Courtney Pine’s band. Now Courtney plays on Sam’s record.

RISE is out now.

For more than ten years, Samuel Dubois has stood next to Courtney Pine on stage. Tours, BBC sessions, Jools Holland. Sam on steel pan, Courtney on sax, night after night.

RISE is the first time Sam asked Courtney to play on his own music. Courtney said yes.

What came out is 140bpm of jazz-soca. Pan and sax trading lines over drums, congas and bass that don’t let up. It’s a carnival record with a jazz heart, made by two musicians who know each other inside out.

Sam isn’t only a sideman. He’s an award-winning arranger with Ebony Steelband, and RISE is the sound of him stepping out front with his own music.

We recorded it in the UK with Ila Rio on drums, Jose Joyette on congas and Nick Fyffe on bass. The cover is a painting by Dioman.

“Sam has spent years making other people’s music shine. This time it’s his name on the front, and he brought Courtney with him. Producing this one was a joy.”
